Crumb Cabin Presents: VIRGINIA WING + ABJECTS + BARE PALE – Sunday 1st December

crumb cabin

£5 Entry

Not so much a supergroup as an impressive joining of forces, Virginia Wing features members of such cult favourites as La La Vasquez, Dirty Money (not Puff Daddy’s band, smartarse) and the exceptional Let’s Wrestle. With but a single release, dropped exclusively on cassette (let’s have more of that) by Sexbeat, and a handful of live showings under their belt, we’ve been bursting to write about them since catching their hypnotic display at Land of Kings festival. Divination shows swathes of promise, a warm, rich and considered piece displaying vaguely psych-tinged leanings and a satisfying taste for traditional songwriting sensibilities.

executive realness

£3 Before Midnight / £5 After

It’s time for the second instalment of Stoke Newington’s premiere disco dance party, Executive Realness.

Join us in a sweaty basement under a pub to celebrate the sounds of disco, house, funk, jazz, Afrobeat and – frankly – anything else we think will keep you grooving.

This time with more balloons, more vinyl and more necessity for a warm jacket on the way to venue. The amount of good vibes will be the same. That is to say, A DECENT AMOUNT.

Eat Your Own Ears Presents: BOXED IN DJs – Monday 2nd December

boxed in

£5 Entry

Boxed In is the new project from London-based producer Oli Bayston.

Having de-camped from a 7 year stint in a Manchester-based band, a decision to move to the capital prompted a wide variety of new experiences. Looking for an antidote to the monotony of touring 12 songs for countless months, he has since collaborated with a number of different musicians, from both sides of the recording and performing world.

Since 2012, he has been working from his own studio in Hackney as a producer and songwriter. He has written and produced songs with Anita Blay (formerly Cock’n’Bull Kid) and has begun work on Rose Elinor Dougall’s new album. Writing and Production work has also included Baxter Dury, Eugene McGuiness, Rosie Lowe, Barringtone, CuT, Totem, The Bohicas, Georgia Mason & Lianne LaHavas.

Eat Your Own Ears Presents: OFEI + D/C – Thursday 28th November

Free Entry

When you begin your year opening for Kendrick Lemar in Paris and Shuggie Otis in New York, you know you are off to a good start. Such was the fortune of Ofei who subsequently spent the summer drawing curious crowds to his one man appearances at UK festivals like The Great Escape, Best Kept Secret, Beacons and Secret Garden Party.

Previously performing live as a one-man show, Ofei unveils his full band with a free show at The Waiting Room on Thursday 28th November.

A dynamic mix of R’n’B, distorted soul and unearthly gospel, Ofei’s style feels incredibly fresh and original, ‘The London EP’ a manifestation of an unorthodox and unpredictable talent at work.

Lanzarote Events Presents: ABSOLUTELY FREE + BEING THERE – Wednesday 27th November

absolutely free

Free with RSVP

Although very much an extension of their DD/MM/YYYY experiment, Absolutely Free create a more hypnotic music that integrates African polyrhythm, psychedelia, Ethiopian jazz, Thai pop and Krautrock. After nearly a decade of working with one another, they have surrendered their individual identities and mutated into a single, self-sufficient organism. In doing so, their elastic musicianship and inclination to experiment presents itself as a concise and unified narrative. They have managed to transform DD/MM/YYYY’s brand of niche psych-punk into something more widely appealing.

Free Entry

Folke Newington is the brainchild of Promoter/Musician/Enthusiast Lee Gorton. The night has been a staple diet of Stoke Newington night life going back a number of years, and has a growing reputation for its diverse acts and endless energy. Promoter Lee Gorton describes it as ‘a ramshackle free for all of the finest musicians and bands’. Certainly not a typical folk night, music ranges from the obscure to the beautiful, whether it be a 10 piece male vocal group, acoustic singer songwriter, punk poet, or the weekly appearance of coolest OAP in East London, X Factor’s Dave Elvis. The night exudes its own special party atmosphere quite unlike any other night, and akin to an old school musical variety performance, it never fails to surprise and entertain.

KiLiLive Presents: PAUL THOMAS SAUNDERS, LONE OMI – Monday 25th November

KiLiLive Presents the Paul Thomas Saunders Single Launch Show! With it only being his second ever headline show, this one is going to be something special!

‘Lilac & Wisteria’ was produced and recorded by Paul and his live guitarist Max Prior at their house on the outskirts of Leeds. The songs were never demoed, which allowed them to replicate the constructive approach undertaken to prepare for his live set. This, what some might call foolhardy, approach contributed greatly to the arrangements of each song which is where Paul’s music found its discerning character. As a result of building the song from its bare bones, they grew slowly, patiently developing as if the parts were being thought of and introduced one by one, eventually blooming into a fully realised sound just in time for each track to come to its close.
